Brilliant Effort Under Big Weight

WANTWOOD’S SURPRISE Special Reporter CHRISTCHURCH, Nov 23. The New Zealand Cup meeting was opened at Riccarton yesterday in fine weather, but a stiff easterly swept the course. The going was in splendid order. It was a day of surprises with several substantial dividends, the only win favourite to score being the winner of the Cup. By his brilliant win Beau le Havre fully justified the claims made for him that he can be classified among the really great horses of the turf in New Zealand. He did not get the best of runs in the early stages, and W. Connor had to chan'ge his line of running as the field galloped down the back. He carried his 9st 31b like a champion and came home straight as a gun barrel to beat Royal Tan, to whom he gave 191 b. Horses owned in Otago and Southland got their full share of the stakes, Wantwood winning the Stewards’ Handicap, Trident the Welcome Stakes, and Fine Night the Apprentices’ Handicap, while Salmon Spear, Spare Part, Robin Redbreast, and Signal Officer collected place money.

The attendance appeared to be up to the average, but the t'otalisator showed a drop from £172,900 to £147,401. Following are the details:—

New Zealand Derby Beaugard, Prince Coronach, and Master Fox were slow to begin, and General Argosy and Thimble were the first to show out from Excellency. Liebestraum, Distinction, Detract and Banshee. As they ran past the mile post Thimble drew to the front from General Argosy, and then came Liebestraum, Distinction, Excellency, Magnaform, Banshee, Detract, Kartikeya and Renowned. Four furlongs from home Thimble was trailed by Liebestraum, and these two were well clear of a bunch comprised of General Argosy, Banshee. Distinction, Excellency, Magnaform and Kartikeya. Thimble was first into the straight but began to weaken, and a furlong from home Liebestraum was clear, and was being challenged by Distinction. The latter finished particularly well, but just failed to gather Liebestraum, Magnaform also came home well for third, with Kartikeya fourth, ahead of Renowned and Excellency. Apprentices’ Handicap Sorry and Robinette were last to leave the barrier and Beechwood led out from Miss Bairnsfather, Pageantry, Invest, Morning Watch, and Fine Night. With half a mile to run, Fine Night moved up to fourth and Invest began to give ground. As the field came round the home bend Miss Bairnsfather and Fine Night headed Beechwood off, and these three were followed by Pageantry, Morning Watch, Angell and Invest. A furlong from home Fine Night shook Miss Bairnsfather off and went on to win from Spare Part, who came from the clouds, with Miss Bairnsfather third, and Pageantry fourth, followed by The Stormovik. New Zealand Cup Howe and Aganev were taken out of the Cup field and the public’s judgment was justified, the winner, Beau Le Havre, being 1/2 in the betting, and the second horse, Royal Tan, 2/1. The field went away to a good line, and as they ran past the post the first time Wild Ribbon, Lord Dundonald, Catterick Bridge, Langue d’Or, Royal Victor, and Gay Stroller were prominent, and they were followed by Nightchild, Rosswood, Palm Bearer, Royal Tan, Longsword, Merry Robin, Boolamskee, Eriskay, Welcome Guest, Signal Officer, Broiefield, Pandemonium, and Miss Medley, pasing the nine-furlong post, Catterick Bridge took up the running from Lord Dundonald, Wild Ribbon, and Royal Victor, At this stage, Beau Le Havre had dropped back to eleventh, and Signal Officer was fifteenth. Down the back. Signal Officer went through the field very fast, and at the five-furlong post he was in second place to" Royal Victor, and was followed by Royal Tan. Catterick Bridge and Lord Dundonald were weakening, and Beau Le Havre was being taken up quietly to a handy position. Signal Officer slipped the field four furlongs from home, and the order after him was Royal Victor, Royal Tan, Lord Dundonald, Gay Stroller, Beau Le Havre. Wild Ribbon,. Boolamskee, Langue d’Or, and Palm Bearer. Signal Officer was first into the straight from Royal Tan, Royal Victor, Beau Le Havre, and Gay Stroller. Royal Tan had Signal Officer beaten over a furlong from the post, and at this stage looked like the winner, but Beau Le Havre, responding gamely to Vigorous riding, finished brilliantly to win from Royal Tan, with Royal Victor just beating Signal Officer for third. Eriskay, who finished strongly wide out, was next ahead of Gay Stroller. Then came Palm Bearer, Pandemonium, Boolamskee, Miss Medley, Welcome Guest, Longsword, Merry Robin, Broiefield, Lord Dundonald, Rosswood, Wild Ribbon, Langue d’Or. Nightchild, and Catterick Bridge. Welcome Stakes Magical was backed as a certainty for the Welcome Stakes, but after having every chance, he was beaten by Trident in a photo finish. The favourite and Top Deck went out best from the barrier, and they opened' a gap from Trident, who was followed by Running Brook, Peridot, Golden Amber, Curtana, and Card Money. Magical and Top Deck had a break of four lengths on Trident as the field ran to the course proper. Trident then came through with a strong run and galloped stride for stride with Magical to win by the narrowest of margins. Golden Amber finished third and was followed by Card Money and Top Deck, Stewards’ Handicap

The Stewards’ Handicap saw the downfall of another warm favourite wlien Blue Trout was beaten into fourth place after looking all over a winner over a furlong from home. Wild Note was slow to find his legs and Blue Trout made a smart beginning to lead out from Deep Harmony, Voltaic, W.hitley, Red Pickle and Flying Orders. Royal Tor moved through smartly to take third place behind Blue Trout and Deep Harmony at the end of two furlongs. Blue Trout was clear by four lengths from Deep Harmony as they crossed the gap to the course proper, and then came Royal Tor, Voltaic, Whitley, Citation, Zealander, Wantwood. Red Pickle and John Gay. About a furlong from home Voltaic ran up to Blue Trout and had her beaten when Wantwood came with a great run to get the decision in a photo finish. Zealander beat Blue Trout for third and the next to finish were Sea Fury, John Gav and Red Pickle. Riccarton Handicap

Wide Range was turned the wrong way when the barrier lifted and Dash o’ Dink lost several lengths also. Julius Caesar began well' and in the early funning he lead from Revolte Mesalliance, Salmon Spear, and Double Cross. Past the six the order was Julius Cmsar, Palomino, Double Cross, Mesalliance, Indian Dawn, Salmon Spear, and Howe. The last-named dropped right back, until only Dash o’ Dink and Wide Range were behind him. Julius Caesar showed the way into the straight from Palomino. Indian Dawn, Salmon Spear Clyde Bridge, and Messalliance Well down the running, Salmon Spear looked like winning, but Howe came with a brilliant run to beat him. Mesalliance finished third, ahead of Indian Dawn, and then came Double Cross, Authentic. Aganev, Revolte and Clyde Bridge.
