KELSO’S ANNUAL SHOW

Record Attendance and Entries

The thirty-fourth annual show at Kelso on Saturday received a record number of entries, and the thousands who attended the show provided a record gate. Held in perfect weather, the show was regarded by residents as the best ever seen locally.

Like most shows throughout the South Island in recent years, the Kelso Show was without what was once its most spectacular exhibit—a large entry in the draught horse classes. As mechanisation has come to the farms, the entries of draughts have steadily dwindled, and this year there were none at Kelso, compared with' seven last year and 14 the year before. There was, however, some compensation in the increased entries in the light horse classes, some excellent types being on show. For a non-dairying area, it was inter-, esting to note that there were twice as many cattle as in the previous year. The display of sheep, in spite of any decrease in the number of available exhibits, caused by the high prices during the season, was of first quality and worthy of any show ring. In same cases exhibits had been entered in the wrong classes, but the judges considered that the overall quality was higher than that of a few years ago. The produce and baking sections were well supported. Results in the principal classes were:— SHEEP Southdowns, Natural Condition (judge, Mr J. Grant, Bayswater).—Rams: Over 18 months —Estate D.
