CHRISTCHURCH FIRE TRAGEDY
Sir,—Allow me at this time of a terrible tragedy to suggest as a- means of safety in ail buildings such as Ballantyne’s to put forward a suggestion on the matter of fire escapes; that is, to have chutes from different parts of each floor to points of exit on the ground floor, to be built so as to be fire-proof, each section of the staff to be allocated a chute to be used in such an emergency as ca.i from the outside are all right for young people, but how can an elderly person with.children..manage to S b d probably btS of that compared with the safety oi lives? x hope this will be the notice of the officials of the Fire Board and others higher up, so that in future such a tragedy may n°t happen again.—l am, etc., F - Ewmg.
