SUMMER SHOW

LASTING TWO DAYS EXCELLENT ENTRIES RECEIVED For the first time since 1938, the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Summer Show next week will cover two days. Judging by the entries and the type of stock to be offered, the display should be comparable with pre-war exhibitions. The show will open on Tuesday morning, and preparations are now in train at Tahuna Park for what is hoped to be an outstanding event. The Mayor, Mr Cameron, has asked all employers to observe Wednesday afternoon as a holiday. He said yesterday that the show provided an opportunity for city residents to show their interest in the farming industry and production, on which urban life depended. The crew of H.M.S. Bellona, which will be in Dunedin next week, had been invited to attend the show. Next week’s show would serve as a preliminary to the big events the society had planned for the Centennial year, said the secretary of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society, Mr R. D. Stewart, yesterday. Entries had been received from all parts of the South Island. He said that the Ayrshire cattle entries were the best for many years, and that the Friesian and Jersey sections were also well supported. Milking Shorthorns would be exhibited for the first time in some years. The display of Clydesdales could be described as the best in the country, and 44 horses would be exhibited, compared with 11 at the South Island championship show at Christchurch recently. „ Mr Stewart said that two excellent programmes had been arranged for the ring on both afternoons. The light horse events would be of a high standard, and the entries of hacks and ponies were gratifying. It was emphasised that, owing to the number of entries in those events, the judges’ schedules would have to be kept right up to time. The parade on Wednesday afternoon would display the prize stock, and other attractions would include dog trials, a steer riding championship, and the Dunedin Fanciers Club dog show, besides the numerous side shows and amusements.
