COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
OTAGO BRANCH MEETING The Rev. L. D. C. Groves presided at the Otago branch meeting of the National Council of Churches. The Department of Labour and Employment wrote asking that a representative be appointed to a proposed Immigration Welfare Committee, Mr J. Farauharson being appointed.
The secretary reported that, in response to the National Council’s appeal for 10.000 pairs of women’s shoes for needy church workers in Central Europe, Dunedin had given 2500 pairs and the Dominion 20.000 pairs. The Red Cross Society had treated and packed the shoes. The Rev. A. M Elliffe sent a report that arrangements for the Centennial celebrations were proceeding and that all the constitutent churches had agreed to provide a float for the prosession.
The Rev. R. S. Watson drew attention to the Family Guidance Centre that was operating in Auckland and urged that consideration be given to something similar for Dunedin The meeting decided to keep this as an objective of the Home and Family Week to be held in August. A motion expressing sympathy with all who suffered as a result of the Christchurch fire is to be forwarded through the Mayor of Christchurch.
