Beau le Havre Popular Choice
BLUE TROUT IN STEWARDS’ Riccarton will be the Mecca of thousands of racing enthusiasts from all parts of the Dominion tomorrow, when the Cup meeting will be opened, with the New Zealand Cup, the Stewards’ Handicap, and the New Zealand Derby the features of a most attractive card. Twenty-two horses were accepted for in the Cup, but Aganev has dropped out, and there will probably be further defections when final payments are made at the post. Beau le Havre is the ante-post favourite for the race, and he is certain to be given that position on the totalisator. His task will, however, not be an easy one, as he has the steadier of 9.3, and only one winner of the race has carried more than 9.0. The field is not a particularly strong one, and includes very few proved stayers. The first race of the day is timed to start at 10.42 a.m., and the favourites may come from the following:— 10.42: Middleton Hurdles.—Wane, Sir Saladin, Foreign Ways. 11.27: Spring Nursery Handicap.—Robin Redbreast, Finigin, Airwyn. * 12.12: Derby Stakes.—Thimble, Distinction, Sweet Nymph. 12.57: Apprentices’ Handicap.—Miss Bairnsfather, Spare Part, The Stormovik. 1.47: New Zealand Cup.—Beau le Havre, Welcome Guest, • Signal Officer. 2.27: Welcome Stakes.—Magical, Air Belle, Trident. 3.12: Stewards’ Handicap —Blue Trout, Theocritus, Red Pickle. 3.57: Riccarton Handicap.—Howe, Indian Dawn, Aganev.
