TOLL TRAFFIC INCREASE

MANY CALLS FROM DUNEDIN A large increase in the number of telephone toll calls from Dunedin to Christchurch .was occasioned by the fire and, presumably, these calls were inquiries by Dunedin residents for the safety of relations and friends who were known to be either employees or regular customers of Ballantyne’s. Soon after news of the fire began to filter into Dunedin late on , Tuesday afternoon, the increase in the toll traffic to Christchurch became apparent. Usually, the delay in calls to Christchurch in the evening is no more than half an hour, but between 7 and about 10 p.m. on Tuesday such calls were delayed as much as an hour and •a-half. i : ;> As there are several toll lines between Dunedin and_ Christchurch, the delays experienced indicate the; extent of the abnormal traffic. Again, yesterday morning toll traffic to Christchurch was heavy, Calls were not unusually delayed yesterday afternoon but last evening many more toll calls from Dunedin to Christchurch were put through.
