PATHETIC EXHIBITS
SALVAGE FROM BUILDING RECOVERY BY POLICE P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 19. Two truckloads of women’s under- * wear were salvaged from the wreckage of Ballantyne’s this afternoon. The goods, which had been stored in the basement-under the tearooms in Cashel street, were damaged by water, but employees were surprised to find anything worth keeping amongst the wreckage. The only other goods salvaged were tables, chairs, and silverware from the tearooms, the greater part of which was undamaged, except: by water. Pathetic exhibits were brought from the building by police officers during the afternoon. Bags, purses, baskets, and books were among the things taken by the police in the hope; that they would provide some clue to identify the bodies recovered. Police and firemen forced an entry into the strongroom of the firm to-day and it was found that all the books and records there were safe. It was thought likely at one time, and a rumour circulated that one or more persons might be in the strongroom, but ho bodies were recovered. = '
