THANKS EXPRESSED
CITIZENS’ ASSISTANCE P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 19. The thanks of the Government to all who had helped in the fire were expressed by the Minister of Labour, Mr McLagan, to-day. He paid tribute to the firemen, the police, servicemen, the City Council staff, and the citizens generally for the splendid way in which they had tackled the job of giving such assistance as was .in their power. The superintendent of police, Mr H. Scott, also praised the help given by members of the public .at ,-the fire. He said the crowds had helped the police in every manner possible. It was a further example of the orderliness of the people of Christchurch on such occasions. Mr Scott also thanked the Army, the Navy, the St. John Ambulance Association, the Red Cross, and social .workers who had done so much in the grave emergency. He said that more than 100 members of the Police Force were stationed at .the fire.
