MASS FUNERAL
ARRANGED FOR SUNDAY IDENTIFICATION OF VICTIMS ' IMPOSSIBLE P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 19. Because of the impossibility of identifying any of the fire victims, there will be "a mass public funeral. This was decided to-day after a conference between the Minister of Labour, Mr McLagan, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, the Mayor, Mr Andrews, the company’s directors, representatives of Government departments, and City Council officers. Tentative arrangements have been made for a public service and funeral to be held on Sunday. Mr McLagan said. after the conference that those present were unanimously of the opinion that a common funeral was the only practical course. The Mayor would get in touch with leaders of various churches regarding the service and funeral. When Mr McLagan raised the question of a public funeral at the conference, Mr Holland said there was such widespread grief at the disaster that there would be an immense attendance. Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced later. At present it is suggested that the service should be non-denominational and should be held either in King Edward Barracks or in the open.air.
