December 6 Canterbury J.C ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT “ Curious,” Queenstown. —British Lad is brown in colour and 16 years old. Jottings A final payment of £2l for the New Zealand Cup is due at the post. A. J. Stokes will ride Lord Dundonald in the New Zealand Cup. Nominations for the Tapanui meeting are due on Wednesday next. 1 Langue d’Or is one of the few proved stayers in the New Zealand Cup field. C. ■ C Stokes will ride Lexia in the Stewards’ Handicap. Improvement Required Boolamskee would have to improve a lot on his Invercargill form to have a chance in the New Zealand Cup. Invercargill Winner Dark Chief was having only his second race when he won a division of the Trial Handicap at Invercargill. He is one of F. J. Boyle’s team, and is a three-year-old by Royal. Chief from Vilia, by Weathervane from a Songbird mare. Cup Candidate Gay Strpller has no winning form this season, but last season the Foxbridge gelding won the Sockburn Handicap from Palm Bearer, who beat him by a head in the Great Autumn Handicap. Palm Bearer was in receipt of 161 b. In the New Zealand Cup the margin between them is 71b. Only Two Wins Royal Tan, who is among the favourites for the New Zealand Cup, has won only two races—the New Zealand Derby and an 11-furlong handicap at Timaru, but his form at Trentham was impressive, and he has been working well in the meantime. Defaulter Three-year-old / Detract is among those who are expected to race prominently at the Cup meeting. The Defaulter three-year-old won the High-weight Handicap at Rangiora on Labour Day, and shaped like a stayer. He was got from Trapeze, by Ringmaster from Merry Miss, by Son-in-Law from Merrie Lassie, by Black Jester, a half-brother to Absurd.. Outstanding Performance Voltaic’s performance in winning the Flying Handicap at Feilding was a brilliant one, The Revelation gelding lost ground at the start, and tailed off badly in the first couple of furlongs. He improved his position slightly racing to the home turn, but was still half a dozen lengths away from the leader as the field straightened up for the run to the judge. Halfway down the running he swept round the field with a sustained run and got up to win in the last stride. Looked Well After the running of the Manchester Handicap at Feilding on Saturday, King’s Ransom, ridden by W J. Broughton, galloped five furlongs. He was never at top at any stage, and was timed to cover the distance in lmin 4 4-ssec. He looked particularly well, and his connections advised that he would make the trip to the Cup meeting at Riccarton and that, although no' definite programme has been arranged, the Metropolitan Handicap would probably be his mission.
