BRILLIANT SPRINTERS

Stewards’ Handicap Winners IRISH NOTE HOLDS RECORD A glance through the list of winners of the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap shows that the race has been won two years in succession by only three horses —Vanilla in 1895 and 1896, Glentruin in 1922 and 1923, and Comic Song in 1925 and 1926, and only once has a dead-heat been recorded—Bon Reve and Stardancer in 1912. Horses who have won the race twice at intervals are Vladimir 1902 and 1904, and Paper Slipper 1936 and 1938. Twice within the last 10 years the race has been- won by a locallyowned horse—in 1937 by Alma, whp carried the colours of Mr L. C. Hazlett, president of the Dunedin Jockey Club, and in 1942 by Lord Nuffield, who raced in the interests of, Mr J. A. Brown. Wingatui stables will be represented in Saturday’s race by Red Pickle, Lorna Leigh, and Stagestruck. When Soneri won last season she carried 9st 131 b, equalling the weight-carrying record set by Arrowsmith in 1920. The time record for the race was set at lmin 9sec by Irish Note, the winner in 1945.
