OFF THE TARGET

FLARE SHELLS CAUSE DAMAGE

SYDNEY, Nov. 17.

Parachute flare shells fired last night from North Head as part of an army display designed to attract more recruits, damaged four buildings at North Bondi. One resident had a remarkable escape when a metal base of a shell weighing about lib struck his head a glancing blow. Damage was caused by other shell bases which fell in a straight line within a distance of half a mile. The base which grazed the resident crashed through a tiled roof and ceiling, filling the air with plaster dust. Other roofs were holed and a window box was carried away. An army spokesman said that it seemed impossible for the bases to have landed where they did, as all the firing was directed at points well at sea.
