AUSTRALIANS COLLAPSE

WICKETS FALL CHEAPLY INDIANS FIGHT TO AVERT DEFEAT Rec. 11 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 17 The astonishing collapse of aspirants for Australia’s test team w-as a feature of the third day’s play in the match India versus an Australian eleven. In little more than an hour the last six wickets fell for 38 runs. The Indian middle batsmen again failed to get going in the second innings, and at stumps, with a lead of 118 runs and with five wickets down, the tourists were fighting to avert defeat. , ... The Australian teams batting collapse was because of sheer bad batting. The wicket was near perfect. One after the other the batsmen snicked at balls pitched outside the off stump, and they paid the penalty they deserved. These were caught bv the wicket-keeper, Irani, and two others at first slips. Four runs were added to Saturday’s total of four wickets for 342 runs, and then three wickets fell without addition. Sohoni had the fine figures of three wickets for 6 runs to-day off five overs. India began the second innings only 54 runs in arrears. The Indian openers, Mankad and Sarwate, taking no chances, wiped off the deficit. Their first wicket partnership of 69 was the best of the Indians so far this tour. Mankad batted well for his runs. Gulmahomed gave chances at 12 and 18 before being bowled at 20. Sarwate, in a painstaking innings, took 186 minutes to reach 58. He had a life at 35. India's two best batsmen, Hazare and Armanath, failed, and at stumps India was struggling for runs* Dooland was the best of an accurate attack.
