CONCERN EXPRESSED

NO AIRCRAFT CARRIER IN PACIFIC AUSTRALIA’S PREDICAMENT LONDON, Nov. 16. It is understood that the aircraft carrier Theseus has been withdrawn from the Pacific Fleet and is on her way to England. This means that there will be no British aircraft carriers east of the Suez, says the naval correspondent of the Sunday Times. Australia is seriously worried about the fleet reduction in the Eastern theatre, the paper says, and the Royal Australian Navy, with its increased responsibility, is now most anxious to acquire two aircraft carriers from Britain.

The correspondent adds that comment is bitter. It is being asked: “What do we do if trouble arises? Send an S.O.S. to the American Navy? ” Concern is being voiced that Australia may be driven to align her defence with America rather than with Britain.
