AMMUNITION DUMPS EXPLODE
DISASTER IN JAPAN Rec. 1 a.m. TOKIO, Nov. 17. A series of tremendous explosions to-day in ammunition dumps near the former Japanese naval base at Yokosuka, 30 miles from Tokio, destroyed at least Seven warehouses and hundreds of thousands of pounds of high explosives. The casualties so far reported are 10 American officers and four enlisted men. Four Japanese were injured, none seriously. Further casualties are expected when a complete check has been made. All available doctors and ambulances have been sent to the scene. The first explosion occurred at 10 a.m. in warehouses containing rifle grenades and mortar ammunition. This was followed by explosions in warehouses containing rifle bullets, shells, and fused detonators. The explosions appeared under control this afternoon, but the resulting fire in the woods surrounding the hills is menacing the town of Atogo. Exploding ammuntion endangered firefighters in an area of half a square mile. An American board of officers will investigate the explosions, which are described as most mysterious.
