PERSONAL AND SOCIAL Mrs Hugh Sutherland has returned from a trip to Australia. .’. . . Mr and Mrs Tom Neydand arrived back in Dunedin yesterday fjpm a visit s to Sydney and Melbourne. Mrs H. L. Paterson, Sheen street, Invited friends to a 5 o’clock party on Saturday in honour of Mrs Desmond Stephens. Mrs Desmond Stephens left on Sunday on her return to the West Coast. The president and executive ’of the Otago Women’s Club yesterday entertained new hnembers and several visitors to the city at afternopn tea. At the Travel Club reception In Tudor Hall to-morrow morning the speaker will be Scouter C. Hall. Mesdames J. Starr and M.,Mitchell will be the hostesses. Mrs J. Cooke,- president of the Otago Ladies’ Bowling Club, entertained the members and members of the men.’s section at afternoon tea in the pavilion on Thursday afternoon. Kaikorai ladies were included as they were playing a match. Mr McDougall, president of the men’s club, thanked the hostess on behalf of the men's club. Mrs Coughlan responded on behalf of the ladies. At the monthly social afternoon on Saturday of the Theosophical Women’s Association, Miss c:' Pollard spoke on “Maori Beliefs." -Mr John,Leech’s pupils supplied the music; the accompaniments being played by Mrs Barkman. The closing meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild took the form of a social which was held on Thursday evening in St. John’s Social Hall. After Mrs E. T. Seymour, president, had welcomed members and guests, a " universal handshake ” was given. Mrs Seymour outlined the guild’s activities for> the year, and drew attention to the fact that the guild had been asked to assist, in the decorations for the Centennial Flower; Show. Greetings to the guild were • extended by delegates frOm the National Council of Women, the Women’s Division Federated Farmers, the Home Economics Association, the Red Cross Society, the St. John Ambulance Brigade, the League of Mothers, the, Women’s Institute, the Business and Professional Women’s Association, and the Caversham Ladies’ Bowling Club. A delightful programme was rendered by Mrs Ryall’s. Marionette Party, songs by Mesdames Howison, Irvine, Hoskins and Woodhouse, recitations by Mrs Dugdale, and a play by members of the St. Clair Women’s Club. A “ Yes ” And “ No ” competition was won by Mesdames de Beer and Watson.
At the Green Room Club's meeting last night Bernard Shaw’s play “ You Never Can Tell ” was read. It was produced by Mrs O. C.vStephens, and those - taking part were Mrs M, F. O'Sullivan, Misses Betty Dillon and Averil Stephens, and Messrs R. White, J. S. D. More, S. Mee, R. Reynolds, A. C. Stephens and K. Howden.
