FAIRY WINGS CONSISTENT Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 16. Admiration led Highland Dale and Real Nugget for a mile in the Shirley Handicap. Carisbrook then took charge but Dandy Grattan headed him starting the last round. Pocket Edition took second place along the back and wore Dandy Grattan down in the run home, winning by a neck. Starshell, after being handy all the way, finished strongly f°r third, with Lady Spray, Real Nugget and Admiration in line close up. Gloucester Handicap Glenlee was early leader in the Gloucester Handicap, but Golden Amazon took charge after three furlongs, Castigate and Great Venture following him at the start of the last round. Golden Amazon retired at the home turn, Castigate going on from Great Venture while Fairv Wings was making up ground fast. Castigate broke in the straight and Fairy Wings got up to beat Great Venture decisively if narrowly. Jimmy Scott, Keen Blade and Frank Scott headed the others after a gap. Durham Handicap Ann Scott lead for half a mile in the Durham Handicap Lone Raider and Certainty then took charge from Baby Grand and Lady Ngaio, with Johnnie Lawn also handy. Baby Grand led at the mile post, Checkmate, Lady Ngaio, Johnnie Lawn, and Certainty following when they started the last' round. Lady Ngaio and Checkmate led Johnnie Lawn, Lone Raider, and Communique to the straight. Then Jackie Guv appeared with a brilliant run from the back, and just when Johnnie Lawn took the measure of Lady Ngaio near the post Jackie Guy dashed up to win easily. After the first three. Lone Raider, Communique, and Ingle Belmer headed a bunch. Unpopular Win The win of Globe Direct in the G. W. C. Smithson Handicap was very unpopular with a section of the public, which made a noisy, hostile demonstration when he returned to the birdcage after the race. Worthy Gold set out to lead all the way. His bracket mates, Captain Gaillard -Sprayman, and Belhall, followed him early, with Scotch Music next. Maori Home moved up fast at the end of six furlongs, and at the mile post joined Captain Gaillard in second place. Globe Direct was handy on the rails, and three furlongs from home he still was there, with Worthy Gold, Maori Home, Captain Gaillard, Sprayman, and Scotch Music in front of him. Racing for the straight Globe Direct, was pulled out from the rails, and he finished strongly, beating Worthy Gold easily by a length. Maori Home and Captain Gaillard were close up, with Snowflake and Sprayman heading the others. A protest against the winner on the ground of inconsistent running was dismissed, M. Holmes s explanation being accepted.

Manchester Handicap The favourite, Red Hussar, led for six furlongs in the Manchester Handicap, after which Miranda Scott headed him. Monagh Leagh jo’ned the leader starting the last round. ■ Good Review ran up to second place three furlongs from home, but Caudray took charge a little further on. Free Fight made his effort in the straight, and just when he looked the winner Good Review dashed up on the inside, a photo shovying that he beat Free Fight by a nose. Indian Triumph, Caudray, and Indigo were next. Trotting Free-for-All Aerial Scott led Fantom, Hidden Note, and Betty Maxegin early in the Trotting Free-for-All, but after half a mile Fantom took charge, with Blue Horizon and Hidden Note handy, Betty Maxegin having broken up. Mistydale also joined in starting the last round. Fantom and Hidden Note led Mistydale and Aerial Scott to the straight, but Aerial Scott finshed best, beating Mistydale by half a length, while Casabianca finished well to beat Hidden Note for third. Rerewaka was fifth, his bracket mate, Sure Harvest, having broken early. Fantom collapsed in trie run home. , Lightning Handicap Scholarship led most of the way in the Lightning Handicap. Remlap, Jeeves, and Direct Medium were always prominent behind him, while Johnnie Lawn was also. handy over the last half-mile. Remlap was in trouble when the straight was reached, and Direct Medium took second place. Scholarship tired, and Direct Medium got up near the post to win narrowly, while Johnnie Lawn also headed Scholarship on the post. Jeeves and Remlap were next.
