BOXING ASSOCIATION

Annual Social

“ During the past two seasons the association has done its share in bringing in outside boxers, and this has been mainly responsible for improving the standard of boxing in Oamaru,” said Mr S. Ashton, when proposing the toast to competitors at the annual social of the Oamaru Boxing Association on Saturday night. “ This has resulted,” Mr Ashton said, “ in several Oamaru boys doing well for, themselves in the New Zealand Championships." About 160 boxers, trainers, supporters, and friends of the association attended the function, and Mr L. Webb was in the chair. The following toast list was honoured: Deceased members and supporters; New Zealand Boxing Council (Mr J. Firman-Mr T. Nightingale); competitors (Mr S. Ashton-Mr M. Gardiner); trainers (Mr A. N. Oakey-Messrs J. Thwaites and A. Luxon); kindred sports (Mr J. Dooley-Messrs W. Berry, Rugby Union, W. M. Uttley, sports bodies, E. Coker, hockey, Collins golf. Grant, soft ball); the entertainers (Mr V. Wright). ' The following trophies wore presented by Messrs T. Crisp, W.’ M. Uttley, T. Nightingale, and L. Webb:—Kibblewhite cup, Colin Kerr (Dunedin); T. Crisp cup, J. Morrison (Dunedin); Joe Thwaites cup, J. Beil (Dunedin); Playfair cup, R. Saddler (Waimate); Frank Cleverley cup, Allan Ward; T. Patterson cup, B. Collings; Bert Halkett cup, B. Lucas (Waimate); Riverhead Gold cup, M. Gardiner; “ Billy ” Sullivan cup, J. Dobson. The following contributed items: Messrs J. Macmillan, K. Cameron, E. McNulty, J. Hayward, J. Wilson. A. N. Oakey, S. Muirhead, W. Patterson, J. Sinclair, and the Rev. Father Pound.
