EQUAL PAY CLAIMED
WOMEN RAILWAY CARRIAGE CLEANERS P.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 14. Equal pay for equal work-in particular whether women railway carriage cleaners should receive the same wages as male cleaners—was arguejl to-day before the Railways Industrial Tribunal. The case for the women cleaners, as members of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants,
was put by Mr H. R. Bishop. Railways department female car cleaners, he said, were required to perform the same duties as those allotted to male cleaners in cleaning the inside of carriages, and they were allotted the same number of cars. On behalf of the department, Mr N. L. Stevenson said the present relation of rates of pay for cleaners was considered reasonable. The broader implications which would be involved in relation to the ratio of women's wages to men’s in other classes of work if the claim were allowed could not be overlooked.
