RECORD FIGURE

EXPORTS FROM DOMINION SUBSTANTIAL EXCESS OVER IMPORTS Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Nov. 14. The value of exports from New Zealand in 1946 reached the record figure of £-N.Z.99,406,366, an excess of £27,772,252 over imports. The volume of goods exported was 2 per cent, below the record established in 1942. These figures are contained in the trade and. shipping statistics for 1946 just issued by the Census and Statistics Department. A special circumtance which increased the volume and value of the 1946 exports was the shipmerit of a heavy total of wool, a considerable quantity of which had been accumulated in store during the war. The volume and value of New Zealand’s chief exports for the year were:

Commenting on the export figures the Census and Statistics Department says that exports of wool established a record both for volume and value. The previous record was in 1922. The largest buyers in 1946 were the United Kingdom, the United States. France, Germany, and Canada. Although frozen meat as a whole showed an increase of 14 per cent, over the 1939 figures individual items in pork and veal registered large decreases—6l per cent, and 42 per cent, respectively. Lamb, on the other hand, increased by 25 per cent., and mutton by 27 per cent. The total export of meat for 1946, frozen and canned, was only 5000 tons below the record shipment of 1940. Butter and cheese both showed decreases in volume of export on the 1939 figures—butter by 17 per cent, and cheese by 10 per cent. Values, on the other hand, were considerably higher, butter recording an increase of 23 per cent, and cheese 44 per cent. Because of the drought, cheese exports were the lowest for 15 years, except in 1943, when much of it was consumed within the country by United States forces. Dried and condensed milk returned record export figures.
