RICCARTON GALLOPS
EXCELLENCY’S FAST SIX BANSHEE IN GOOD FORM Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 13. With so many horses taking part in the trial gallops yesterday, there was not a great deal of fast work at Riccarton this morning. The Southland filly Excellency was the outstanding performer, with six furlongs on the plough in lmin 14 3-ssec, the only other worth-while effort on that track being lmin 16 2-ssec by Rahine. The Derby colt, Kartikeya, was going easily over seven furlongs in lmin 31 3-ssec. Magical went on the No. 7 grass track, being under a hold while running five furlongs in lmin 2 3-ssec, the last three in 37 2-ssec. Musselman sprinted three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Robin Redbreast took 42 3-ssec, but he jumped a trestle on the way. Indian Dawn ran five furlongs easily in lmin 5 2-ssec. Banshee directed attention to her Oaks prospects when she beat a good field, including some New Zealand Cup candidates and other three-year-olds, over nine furlongs at the race trials yesterday. She was one of the leaders all the way, and she stayed on in attractive style. She had previously shown stamina by beating a hack field over a mile and three furlongs at Trentham. Magnaform was third yesterday, and he is another useful three-year-old. Royal Tan was always handy in the nine-furlong trial, and he was going on nicely to finish fourth, without being ridden out, so he lost none of his Cup admirers. Palm Bearer was slow away, but made up ground in the last half mile, to be close behind Royal Tan. She has not produced her best form so far this season. Lovemorn showed good form to lead the field home in the open sprint trial, after being handy to the leaders all the way. Faithful Pal also gave an attractive showing and can be kept in mind. Flying Orders hung on for third, after being in front from the start with Blue Trout, who was allowed to drop out in the final furlong. Newspaper gave an attractive display to win the first division of the hack sprint. He is a half-brother, by Paper Slipper, to Miss Medley, and he should win soon. Primitive and Citril, who followed him home, are smart three-year-olds. Fort Silver won the second division in good style, and he is one to watch. He just shaded Great Victory, handv all the way and a promising novice. Nadir Shah made friends with a smart late run for third. Riccarton stables are well off for two-year-olds this season, more than 30 turning out for the trials. The most impressive performance was that of Finigin, who outclassed his opponents in the second division. Eulogize, who was just beaten by Celtic Chief in the third division, is a Finis —Praise colt, who may grow into a very good horse. Balkis showed speed to lead practically all the way in the first division, and this Sir Beau filly looks smart. So is Golden Amber, who followed her home.
