GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
PROFESSIONAL FINAL EASY WIN FOR MURRAY P.A NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 13. Although out-driven from the tees, Alex. Murray, of Titirangi, was always master of the situation in the final of the Professional Golf Championship at New Plymouth to-day. Murray beat T. A. Guy (Akarana) 7 and 6. The game was followed by a large gallery until the concluding stages, when it became obvious that it was only a matter of time. The golf in the professional final was far from flawless. During the first nine holes of the morning round-Mur-ray had trouble with his seconds, but he offset this by, splendid chipping and faultless putting to go out in 35, one below par. Guy drove a consistently long ball from the tees, but his putting was lamentably weak. He missed short putts on the first, third, and fifth that would have materially reduced Murray’s 4-up lead at the turn. Guy went out in 40, a lost ball at the eighth costing him 6.
The tenth cost Murray 6 to 4, and thereafter the pair maintained par figures. Murray’s drives were more often than not straight down the fairway, but Guy repeatedly outdrove him, though he was not always on the line. A feature of the round was a drive by Guy that landed within a few yards of the fifteenth green. It was the longest drive seen on this fairway, being between 320 and 330 yards. Murray missed a long putt when he wanted 3 to complete the round in par figures. Murray took 72 and Guy 76/ The tee shots of both deteriorated in the afternoon round, and one or other entered a bunker at four of the 12 holes played. Murray went out of bounds from the second, but because of Guy’s inaccuracy on the green he halved the hole. Guy looked like picking up a hole, at the next, but Murray sank a chip shot for a birdie 3. Guy recovered magnificently with his second on the fifth, after duffing his tee shot and being behind a tree 90 yards from the tee. Guy drove magnificently from - the seventh, and, using a No. 8 iron, got within 12 inches of the pin with his second. Murray conceded the hole to an eagle 3. Guy was bunkered at the ninth, tenth, and eleventh, and Murray suffered a similar fate at the twelfth. The game ended on the short twelfth, which was halved in fours after both tee shots were astray. Murray did the first nine in 37 to Guy’s 38, and both were three over par for the next three. . . ... The results of the quarter-finals of the amateur championships leave W. G.
