ABOLITION OPPOSED

MAIN HIGHWAYS ACCOUNT DIVERSION OF PETROL TAX ALLEGED Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON. Nov. 13. A decision to abolish the Mam Highways Account, provision for which is made in the Finance Bill (No. 2), introduced in the House of Representatives early this morning, was criticised by members of the Opposition during consideration of the Bill in committee in the House to-night. They called for a division on the clause, but it was retained by 37 votes to 35 The Opposition claimed that the Government had diverted moneys received by way of petrol taxation which should have been expended on roads. Doubt was expressed whether the amount to be provided from the Consolidated Fund for road purposes would be sufficient to meet all the improvements that were required. The action taken by the Government was defended by the Minister, of Finance, Mr Nash, who said that since the petrol tax had operated , the total expenditure on roads and bridges had exceeded the revenue collected by a considerable amount. The funds of the Main Highways Board would not suffer as a result of the change.
