REGIME CONDEMNED
FRANCO DICTATORSHIP UNITED NATIONS ACTION RESOLUTION SUPPORTED BY NEW ZEALAND Roc. 10 p.m. NEW YORK, Nov. 12. The United Nations Political Committee, over-riding American objections to-day, voted fresh condemnation of Franco Spain. The resolution adopted by the committee cleared the way for possible economic sanctions against Spain as long as General Franco remains as dictator.
The resolution “ expressed confidence that the Security Council will exercise its responsibilities as soon as it considers the situation in Spain so requires.” These responsibilities could include an order that the United Nations members sever diplomatic and economic relations with Spain, but the debate showed, however, that most members were not ready to go that far at present. The resolution was approved by 29 votes to 6. New Zealand, Britain, France, China, and Russia were among the nations voting for the resolution. Australia, the United States and 18 other nations abstained.
