HIGH SCHOOLS' BOARD
Monthly Meeting
Mr J. C. Kirkness was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Waitaki High Schools’ Board of Governors yesterday afternoon. The Otago Education Department advised that the following’grants had been approved:—Blinds for Girls’ School, £lB 12s; furniture for common room at Boys’ School, £170; alterations and furnishings, common room, Girls’ School, £380; tennis courts, Girls’ School, £825. The department also advised that typewriters would not be available until the end of the year. The following recommendations from the Finance Committee were approved;— That the wages of janitors and groundsmen be increased by 6s Id a week, and those of the two principals’ clerical assistants by 5s a week; that an order be placed with the Education Department for four Imperial typewriters at £3O each for the Girls’ School. The following appointments were approved:—Mr J. Marks, boys’ intermediate department; Misses A. Ingram and E. Miller, relieving assistants, Girls’ School. The board’s architect, Mr W. I. Stevenson, wrote stating that it would cost £l5O to £2OO to clean the ceiling of the Hall of Memories. —Referred to the secretary to make further inquiries. The rector. Mr J. T. Burrows, reported that £SO had been offered to the school by Mrs T. B. Bowker, Dunedin, in memory of her son, Layton Bowker, who was killed on active service. Mrs Bowker asked for a list of things the school needed, so that she could choose the form which tlie memorial should take. The report added that a pupil, S. G. Hunter, had been selected to represent the Otago district in the competition for the Fryer Memorial Cup. The principal, Miss J. B. Wilson, reported that Misses S. G. Balkind, M.A., and J. L. Milner, 8.A., would take up their duties in February, 1948. The Education Department had made grants as follows:— Library, £10; music, £SO; social studies, £ls. Mrs M. E. Williamson had sold her home in Coquet street and "Nevada ” House, and would no longer be available for additional boarders who could not be accommodated at Waitaki House. „ . The Presbyterian Summer Conference Committee was granted permission to hold a sports meeting at the boys’ school on December 30. ' , . , • . The Education Department advised that Lady Baden-Powell, Chief Guide, would visit New Zealand next year and would be passing through Oamaru on March 11 The board agreed to arrange for Brownies and Guides to meet the Chief Guide. Mr Burrows advised that the annual prize-giving ceremony would be held on December 11, and Miss Wilson advised that the girls’ ceremony would be held on December 12. Parents’ day would be held at the boys’ school on December 2 for the junior school and on December 3 for the senior school. . As yesterday’s meeting of the Waitaki High School Board was the last that Mr J. C. Kirkness (chairman) and Mr James Rodman would attend as members, opportunity was taken to express thanks to both' for their long periods of service. The Rev. A. Marshall, in moving the motion, congratulated Mr Kirkness and Mr Rodman on their 61 and 12* years of service respectively. Mr W. M Cooper said that both members had given of their best, and had contributed in no small way to the successful management of both schools. Miss Wilson expressed appreciation of the services both members had given to the Girls’ School, and Mr Burrows paid a similar tribute in respect to the Boys School.
