TROLLEY BUSES
“ CRITICS CONFOUNDED ” SOLVING TRANSPORT PROBLEMS The new tramway regulations provide a further reason for switching over to trolley buses," said Cr McCrae, chairman of the Transport Committee of the City Council when approached by the Daily Times yesterday. “They prove the wisdom of the ratepayers’ decision and must further confound the critics of the scheme. Opponents of the trolley bus proposals pointed to the numbers that could be crowded on trams, but the new regulations will substantially reduce the number permitted on trams. “ Moreover, our estimates of the passengers trolley buses could carry were based on the assumption that the number of standing passengers could not be more than 50 per cent, of the seating accommodation available,” Cr McCrae said. “On the basis of the new regulations for trams, however, I am more confident than ever that trolley buses will solve our transport
problems and be far more satisfactory than trams. “ In fact, figures taken out prove my case,” Cr McCrae stated. “ The capacity of city trams at peak hours under th< new regulations will total 4147 pas sengers, seated and standing. The 51 trolley buses on the same basis wil carry 4060 passengers, but because o their increased speed an additional one third can be added, giving a tota capacity over the same period of peal loading of 5413. This represents ar additioftal 1266 passengers that can b< carried by the trolley buses.” Cr McCrae added that he had ha( several letters from the British con tractors and the Dunedin orders wen being handled expeditiously. Then was every reason to believe, he said that the trolley buses would be de livered to schedule.
