SOUTHLAND WOOL

SPECIAL EARLY APPRAISAL REQUEST GRANTED (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, Oct. 7. The Southland Woolbrokers’ Association recently made an application to the wool purchasing authorities for a special early appraisal at Invercargill before the end of the year. Advice has now been received that the request has been granted, and an appraisal will probably be held about December 21. Under the former wool, sale conditions the first auction at Invercargill was not held until February. Much early wool, particularly from Eastern Southland, was consequently railed to Dunedin so that growers could take advantage of the , earlier sales there Under the appraisal system, with standardised prices, the railing of wool considerable distances has become uneconomic, and in the last season much larger quantities of wool were handled at Invercargill and exported through Bluff. A number of growers who regularly shear their sheep early have expressed a wish to have their wool appraised before the end of the year, and as a result of the application by the brokers an earlier selling date has been arranged. ■ Because of. the extra quantity of wool handled last season, three appraisals were arranged, the first on January 16. the second on February 13, and the third on April 2. As the first appraisal will be made about December 21 this year, a rearrangement of the other dates will be necessary. The policy of the authorities is apparently to arrange the dates as early as possible. .. Whether much wool will be. available for the December appraisal is not yet known, and much will depend on seasonal conditions during the next two months. Under favourable conditions a fair quantity may be available, but if a broken season is experienced the quantity offered may be small, particularly as a shortage of shearers is considered inevitable.
