SAVING IN FUEL

CITY TRANSPORT INFORMATIVE COMPARISONS Details of the saving in the consumption of fuel by the Transport Department of the Dunedin City Corporation were given to last evening’s meeting of the City Council by the chairman of the Transport Committee (Cr H. L. Gibson), To show that there had been a saving of 670 gallons, equal to 21.4 per cent., in the fortnight ended August 11 compared with the period ended July 21, Cr Gibson said that the petrol totals were 242 gallons against 456 gallons and the fuel oil figures 2222 gallons against 2678 gallons. A more informative comparison could be obtained, he said, by a study of figures for the eight weeks * just ended since the cut was made, and those fcr the previous eight weeks. The respective petrol totals were 795 gallons compared with 1831 gallons, and the fuel oil totals were 9528 gallons, against 11.565 gallons. “A$ minor reductions had taken place from the outbreak of war up till the date of the first comparison, May 27,” Cr Gibson said. “ the position is better still when compared with earlier dates For instance, the average four-weekly mileage for January February and March of this year was 47.866. and for the four weeks ended September 11 it was 36 378—a reduction of 24 per cent.”
