CITY POLICE COURT

Monday, October 7 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) Theft of Shoes A young woman, aged 19. publication of whose name was prohibited, pleaded guilty to the theft of a pair of shoes valued at £l.—Detective Sergeant Hall explained the circumstances of the theft, stating that the shoes were taken from a locked suitcase which had been left at the home of the accused’s mother. —The accused was admitted to probation for 12 months. Money Taken From Safe George Martin Ryan, who was represented by Mr O. G. Stevens, pleaded guilty to the theft of £l2 Is lOd, the property of the Railway Road Service Department.—Detective Sergeant Hall said that on October 4 the sum of £l2 Is lOd, an employee’s wages, was left in the safe of the Railway Bus Terminal in Cumberland street. The following morning the safe was opened but not locked again, and later on the money disappeared. Suspicion fell on several employees, but it was eventually ascertained that the accused, who was on leave at the time, had visited the office during the morning. The accused first denied the offence, but a Post Office Savings Bank book showed that the sum of £lO had been banked on behalf of the Social Club of the bus employees. of which the accused was secretary. The accused then admitted that he had taken the money to make up deficiencies in the club's funds. Ho was going on active service, and wished to sqiyire the funds. —Mr Stevens said the accused had mixed up club money with his own. and had found the funds short. He succumbed to temptation and took the money from the safe. He was 19 years old.—The probation officer (Mr Mosley) said the accused had spent money on taxis and other pleasures.—The accused was admitted to probation for 12 months, restitution to be made. He was prohibited from hiring taxis during the period of probation. Maintenance William George Thompson was proceeded against for disobedience of a maintenance order, the arrears of which amounted to £l4. —The arrears were reduced to £5, and the maintenance order to 12s 6d a week, the defendant being sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, the warrant not to issue provided he paid 12s 6d a week.
