MOTHER BERTRAND HONOURED
A function was held at St. Dominic’s College on Saturday afternoon on the occasion of the ninetieth birthday of Mother Bertrand and the seventy-first year of her religious profession. Mother Bertrand was one of the original band of Dominican Nuns who came to this Dominion in the early days of 1871 and founded St. Dominic’s College, which has the honour of being the oldest orivate college in Dunedin. Mrs R. Boswell, president of the Expupils’ Association, wearing a pale blue and grey ensemble, received the guests, who were very numerous, and who had come from many parts of the Dominion. His Lordship Bishop Whyte was also present. Interesting features of the gathering were the presence of the first boarder, several first-day pupils, and members of four generations of one family, all of whom have been taught at St. Dominic’s The youngest representative of the four generations. Master Edward Comer, presented the guest of honour with a magnificent basket of flowers. After a happy little speech welcoming the guests and the reading of sheaves of telegrams from well wishers, Mrs Boswell, on behalf of the Expupils’ Association, presented Mother Bertrand with a double-tier cake, as well as numerous bouquets of flowers received from far and near. One of these, consisting of the beautiful Australian waratah. had been received by air mail. Afternoon tea was. dispensed by members of the committee of the Expupils' Association,
