STRATFORD MAIN TRUNK

WORK NEARING COMPLETION EARLY RESUMPTION OF TRAFFIC , (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 7. Every effort is being made by the Railways Department to have the Stratford Main Trunk open for express traffic by Labour Day. so that the confusion with holiday trains will be minimised. It is expected that the Auckland-New Plymouth expresses will resume running on the line on October 20 for the first time since it was extensively damaged during the floods eight months ago. Many major obstacles have had to be removed since repair work began on February 25. At the peak of the activity over 200 men were employed with machinery, which included bulldozers, winches, and hauling gear. Over 200 slips required clearing, 30 subsidences and washouts were filled, and about 50 culverts and water drives were restored.
