AMATEUR SWIMMING

ANNUAL MEETING OF CENTRE SUCCESSFUL YEAR RECORDED The annual meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last night, Mr W. A. Jenkins presiding over a full attendance of delegates. A Successful Year “The year has been one of the most successful that the centre has experienced since its inception,” said Mr Jenkins, when moving the adoption of the annual report. “ Due to the efforts of the members, the financial position is particularly sound, and we are now in the happy position of being one of the most active and important centres in the Dominion." Mr Jenkins went on to refer to the “ Learn to Swim" campaign, which had been conducted by the centre during the earlier part of the year, and expressed pleasure at the fact that the country clubs had enthusiastically co-operated in the campaign, especially Balclutha, which, in addition to attending to its own members, had devoted no little time to the teaching of children in the outlying districts. As usual, the city clubs had carried on their teaching activities with undiminished enthusiasm, and the result of their efforts was shown in Otago’s success at the national championship meetings. One very valuable phase of the work of the clubs was the teaching of crippled children, many of whom had derived considerable benefit from the assistance given them. At the present time, many of the country clubs were finding it difficult to carry on. _ In som§ instances 90 per cent, of their senior members had gone on active service, with the result that their finances were strained. To meet this situation, the centre had agreed that their affiliation fees should be suspended for the period of the war, and it was proposed to ask the New Zealand Council to follow suit and carry these clubs until times improved. In conclusion, Mr Jenkins thanked the committee for the assistance it had given during the year, and paid a special tribute to the willing and efficient service given not only to the centre, but to all swimmers, by the secretary (Mr E. C. Isaacs).

Mr S. Brown seconded the motion, which was adopted, and the balance sheet, which was presented by the treasurer (Mr F. E. L. Forrester) was also adopted.
