(Received Oct. 6, at 9.5 p.m.) The Canadian-American Defence Board has announced that it has recommended immediate changes in the defence system of both the coasts of the United States and Canada. Mr F. H. La Guardia, a member of the board, said: “ The board has made specific recommendations for immediate action It is the first

time in the history of the two countries that such an agreement has been reached. We have made great ess in the right direction.” A Daventry announcement on Satin day stated that the CanadianAmencan Defence Board announced that definite plans ot defence have been set up for adoption in the event of attack. Mr La Guardia stated that ihe board’s details would take effect as soon as the United States’ leasing of naval bases in British territories became operative. AMERICAN AIRCRAFT PROGRAMME FOR 18,641 PLANES NEW YORK, Oct. 5. (Received Oct. 6, at 7 p.m.) The United States War Department has awarded a 37,770,000-dol-lar contract to the North American Aviation Company (Incorporated), thus completing the programme for the construction of 18,641 aircraft, which was inaugurated on July 1, and bringing the total of planes ordered since early in the summer to over 20,000. CANADIAN ARMY GROWING IN STRENGTH OTTAWA. Oct. 5. (Received Oct. 6, at 9 p.m.) The Canadian Defence Department has announced that Canada will have an army of 500,000 men in permanent and non-permanent service by next summer. Men on full-time active service at home and overseas now number 150,000, and non-permanent active militia nearly, 112,000, while 29,750 are being called up under the National Resources Mobilisation Act as the first of 240,000 to be summoned during the next 12 months.
