THE BURMA ROAD
HINT OF REOPENING JAPAN AND SINGAPORE POSSIBLE “ DEMONSTRATION ” LONDON, Oct. 5. (Received Oct. 6, at 9 p.m.) Dr Quo Tai-chi, the Chinese Ambassador, visited No 10 Downing street and had a long conversation with Mr Churchill. The subjects discussed, it is understood, included questions relating to the Burma road. The Times in announcing that Dr Quo Tai-chi visited Mr Churchill and discussed the Burma road, says Japan’s attitude does not justify extension of the Burma road agreement, as Japan has thrown in her lot with Britain’s enemies It is believed in some Far Eastern circles that Japan’s operations in Indo China cover a plan to make a demonstration towards Singapore, possibly through Thailand when the Axis strikes in the Mediterranean. PORT OF WEI-HAI-WEI POSSIBLE SEIZURE CHUNKING, Oct. 5 (Received Oct. 6, at 10 p.m.) Questioned regarding the report of the possible seizure by the Japanese of Wei-hai-wei a Chinese Military Spokesman declared that the responsibility would rest with Britain, as China had renewed the lease of Wei-hai-wei to Britain for 10 years. ECONOMIC MISSION JAPAN AND INDO-CHINA TOKIO, Oct. 5 (Received Oct. 6, at 8 p.m.) The Japanese Foreign Office has announced that an economic mission is going to Indo-China to cement closer economic conditions. The Governor of Indo-China, Viceadmiral Decoux, decorated General Nishihara, leader of the Japanese Indo-China mission, with the Order of the Dragon of Annam, with the rank of grand officer, before General Nishihara’s departure on a ’* plea sure trip” to Southern Indo-China where the Indo-Chinese and Thailand troops are massed on the border. Reports have been received here that part of the Japanese troops from Haiphong entered Hanoi suburbs yesterday afternoon and are reported to have been welcomed by the French as weli as the natives.
