THE 8.8. C. BROADCASTS

TO THE EDITOR

Sir, —While agreeing absolutely with your correspondent ‘'Ariel ” about the value of the news commentaries from London by Messrs Vernon Bartlett, A. G. Macdonnell and George Slocombe, I would point out that with the best will in the world the N.B.S. could not give a rebroadcast of these talks in the lunch hour as London does not broadcast them until 1.45 p.m. now. The whole 8.8. C. programme has been revised, beginning from last Sunday, September 29. There are now news bulletins at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and at 1.30 p.m, comes the talk in the “ Britain Speaks ” series, given by J. B. Priestley and others, previously heard at 12. Then at 1.45 p.m. (not at 2 o’clock as stated in the Listener) comes the “ Headline News and Commentary.” The news reel previously heard at 2 p.m. now comes at 3.30 p.m. From tomorrow, Sunday, October 6, a new “Pacific” transmission begins, ,and there will be a “ Headline News and Commentary ” at 8 p.m,, which I hope will prove lo be an electrical .transcription of the 1.45 broadcast, as this is directed mainly to America, and is not always well received here. Then at 9.45 p.m. comes a "News Reel,” which will probably repeat the one at 3.30 p.m. All these times are New Zealand summer time. “Ariel ’’ would oblain all these talks, together with many other interesting and valuable ones bv Warren Irving, Clement Dane, and others on any short-wave set, and if he listens at 8,15 p.m. on Sundays he will get full particulars of the evening programmes for the following week.—l am, etc.. London All the Time. Roxburgh, October 5.
