LAWRENCE Rainfall The Lawrence postmaster (Mr G. J. Powley) reports that during September rain fell on 13 days for a total of 1.78 inches, the heaviest fall on any one day being .36 inches on September 14. For the corresponding month of last year rain fell on 13 days for a total of 1.94 inches. Borough Council The monthly meeting of the' Lawrence Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr R. F. Batchelor) presiding. Tuapeka Motors, Ltd., notified that they were carrying out general improvements to their section, and applied for permission to level the bank on their Colonsay street frontage.—The request was granted. The South Island Travel Association wrote regarding the borough's contribution of £2 2s for the current year.—lt was resolved to discontinue membership of the association during the war period. The Air Force Queen Carnival Committee wrote soliciting a donation for the Air Force Queen. —Received. The Social Security Department advised that in reference to the silting up of Wetherstones Creek, the department was prepared to consider meeting portion of the wages cost when 'abour was available under scheme 13.—Received. Cr Pitt reported that the trees planted in the area east of Whitehaven street were doing particularly well, but others at the south end were being troubled by rabbits. Cr Colgan reported that repairs had been carried out to the Green Valley race, while the renewing of the pipes on the Reservoir Hill would be carried out next week.

Accounts totalling £2OB 10s 5d were passed for payment. Horticultural Society

The Tuapeka Horticultural Society held its annual spring show on Tuesday. The entries in most sections were larger than usual, and the attendance was good. The judges were:—Flowers and vegetaoles, Mr T. H. Clark; industrial, fancy work, and decorative. Mesdames J. G. Leckie and J. Gray (Milton). The sectional prize winners were:—Cut flowers and pot plants. Mrs R. L. Cox; fruit and vegetables, Mr D. Martin (Beaumont); narcissi, amateur, Mr W. J. Milne; narcissi, open. Dr W. ALEXANDRA „ Fruitgrowers’ Association The Earnscleugh Fruitgrowers’ Association has decided to lodge a protest to the Oil Fuel Controller concerning the sharp rise In the price of oil used for frost lighting. The association has also decided to ask other associations to assist in the request. Small-bird Nuisance The 1 nuisance created by small birds has become so acute in the district this year that the EarnScleugh Fruitgrowers’ Association has decided to buy their eggs at Is 6d per 100, and also to wait upon the Vincent County Council and the Alexandra Borough Council to ask them to support the scheme. Golf In the Alexandra Golf Club’s men’s competition for the Cuthbertson Cup E. Parris was the winner with a net score of 215. The scores were;—E. Parris 71—70 —74—215, R. Hewitt 72—69—75. A. Paul 73—74—71, J. D. Watt 74—69—76, W. J. Schaumann 70—74—76. J. J. Comerford 71—72 —77, For the men's Senior Championship I. McLennan proved the winner with a score of 35—34 —69 over the first 18 holes, or 10 up. The runner-up, C. H. Court, could not overtake the lead gained by McLennan. In the final of the women's championship Miss S. Cameron defeated Mrs R. Tohill 5 and 3. Patriotic Guild

The Alexandra Ladies’ Patriotic Guild has been very busy of late preparing 42 parcels as Christmas presents to Alexandra members of the overseas services. Since the men left New Zealand the guild has regularly sent parcels. Valedictory

On Monday evening a number of residents of Alexandra and Fruitlands assembled at the residence of Mr R. Nevill to bid him farewell on the eve of his leaving for camp. Mr Henderson wished him luck, and presented him with a set of military hair brushes.

The staff of the Central Otago Electric Power Board also met to bid farewell to Mr J. C. Hull, who was also leaving for camp. Mr Hull was presented with an engraved fountain pen.'
