HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING!
K) IHE EDITOR Sir, —Every , now and then we hear from members, of our Labour Government and its supporters that we must maintain our present high standard of living, and, indeed,, raise it even higher. To-day we find that at every race meeting the amount of money put through the totalisatpf shows a considerable advance on the amount handled by the machine at the corresponding meetings last year. We also find that the consumption of beer in New Zealand is going up (or should it be down?) by leaps and bounds. That is one side of our high standard of living—betting and beer. The only aspect of the matter that puzzles me is why it should come to pass that most of the cases coming before the courts to-day are connected directly either with beer or with gambling. The standard does- not seem to. work out if we look at it from this.angle. The regrettable part of the position is that many people'do not want to face that angle, and will: not face it. The Labour Government certainly will.not if it continues to maintain that a high standard of living is associated with beer and betting.—l am. etc., . Belshazzar.
