BRUCE COUNTY

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held yesterday at Mil,on, and was attended by Crs W. Moore (chairman), W, J- Sheat, H. M. Driver, Jasper .Clark. A. King, D. IVlcGregor. J. Allison. V. Wilson, A. Renton, A. Higgs, and T. Gage. Taieri Mouth Road A deputation representing Taieri Mouth ratepayers waited on the council in support of a petition asking for meaning • and improvements on the Waihola-Taieri Mouth roads and after the matter had been discussed at some length, it was decided that the member for the riding should co-operate with the ratepayers to evolve ways and means of improving the road. Highway Allocations The Public Works Department advised that the following allocations had been made for main highways in the county, all, on a £3 for £1 basis:— Balclutha-Lawrence, £800; BalcluthaWangaloa, £380; Stony Creek-Hillend, £150; Green Island-Taieri Mouth. £123.

The clerk reported that the allocations had been severely reduced, and the engineer said that the council had itself made reductions of one-third on the unders anding that its application would be granted in full. Work had been done on that assumption. It was agreed that a strong protest should be made against the additional reductions. Engineer’s Report The report of the engineer, Mr J. H. Bateman, setting out the work done during the month in the various ridings was adopted. Finance The clerk reported that expenditure for the month amounted to £I6BB 15s 2d and receipts were £754 3s 3d. General In response to a letter from the town clerk. Dunedin, regarding the collection of waste metal, the council decided to undertake to collect at a suitable depot any material offering. A request from the Counties’ Association for a donation towards a fund for the relief of distress caused by German air raids was declined, and a motion was carried giving permission to the clerk and staff to give any assistance possible for patriotic purposes. Similar requests from other organisations were also declined.
