FIXING OF CLOSING HOURS POWER OF ARBITRATION COURT : N';. i. 'From Our Parliamentary Reporter* WELLINGTON, Oct.. 1. A proposed amendment to the Shops arid Act, which was withdrawn from the Statutes Amendment Bill after considerable criticism when that measure was before .the House of Representatives, in August, was. reintroduced in identically the same form in a Shops and Offices Amendment Bill to-day. The Bill, which contains only thii clause, empowers the Arbitration Court to fix the opening and closing hours of all shops, britprovides for an appeal to a magistrate for exemption from any hours fixed by an award. At the same time the court may make any exemption it considers desirable. While the closing hours of shops ar« fixed by an award,. it will not.. b« possible for shopkeepers; to, fix th# hours by requisition. ‘„ The Bill Was read a second tirrti ■ pro forma, and referred to the Labour Bills Committee.- > i:
