LATE NEWS
GERMAN AIR RAIDERS ATTACKS ON LARGE SCALE (By Wireless) LONDON, Sept. 30. (Received Oct. 1, at 1-30 a.m.) There were three “ alerts ” in London this morning. The first lot of raiders came in over Dungeness on the Kent coast, but were soon driven off. Larger forces came in later over the south-east, about 50 bombers and fighters being in one wave. They were met bv British fighters and anti-aircraft guns on their way to London, and it is not known yet how many planes were brought down. On the south coast there were two bombing attacks this morning, and there were other raiders over a south-east coast town and over towns in the south-west. Altogether, it looks as chough the Germans are resuming their attacks on a large scale after two days of comparative quiet. If that is so there should be a big bag of German pianes to announce at a later stage. During the past two months Britain has been bringing down one German plane every 42 minutes That is the calculation o* Major Elliot, made in a speech at Manchester. He added that, though the Germans had lost one plane every 42 minutes, they were building one in the same time, so that the objective to be aimed at was the destruction of a German plane every 20 minutes. FRENCH COAST SHELLED BIG FIRE AT CALAIS (By Wireless) DAVENTRY, Sept. 30. The French coast was again shelled this morning by long-range British guns. The firing commenced just after dawn and it appears that a direct hit was scored on the quay-side at Calais harbour, for a big fire blazed fiercely for a time. German long-range guns returned the fire and fired four salvoes every 20 minutes on the Dover area, which was shelled again later in the morning. '
