OBITUARY
SIR ALLEN TAYLOR SYDNEY, Sept. 30. (Received Oct. 1, at 1 a.m.) The death has occurred of Sir Allen Taylor, managing director of the North Coast Steam Navigation Company, Ltd. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council for 29 years, and six times Lord Mayor of Sydney. He was 76 years of age. SENOR JULIAN BESTEIRO MADRID, Sept. 29. The death is announced of Senor Julian Besteiro, ex-President of the Cortes, who was serving a 30 years’ sentence. Senor Besteiro was president of the National Council of Defence which surrendered Madrid MR N. KETTLE Mr Nathaniel Kettle, whose death has been announced, was one of the most prominent figures in the commercial and social life of Hawke’s Bay. a son of Mr Charles Henry Kettle, who was chief surveyor for the New Zealand Company, and surveyed the site of Dunedin, he was born in this city in 1854, and educated at the Otago Boys’ High School and at other local schools. In 1869 he entered the office of G. G. Russell and Co., wool and general merchants, and eight years later he went to Napier ao manager of the Hawke’s Bay business of Murray, Common, and Co., now Murrav Roberts, and Co. In 1884 Mr Kettle joined Mr F. W. Williams in a business which he had founded three or four years earlier, and which subsequently became known as Williams and Kettle, Ltd. Mr Kettle was interested in military affairs, and commanded the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast Volunteers. On the outbreak of the Boer War he took charge of the Napier Guards, and then commanded -.the East Coast Battalion as lieutenant-colonel. He also participated in public affairs. He was a prominent member of the Chamber of Commerce, with which he was connected at its formation, and was a pastpresident. He was a former president of the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society. Many sports, particularly golf, found in him a keen patron. In 1880 Mr Kettle married a daughter of Major von Tempsky, commander of the Bushranger Corps during the Maori wars. His wife predeceased him two years ago, and he leaves Iwo sons—Messrs F. V. Kettle and R. D. Kettle, of Napier—and two daughters —Mrs J. Flatten, cf London, and Mrs S. A. Moffatl. of New York. MRS MARY HECKLER Mi-.s Mary Heckler, who died at her residence, “ Hillside,” Warepa, was born at Park Circus lane, Glasgow in 1863. She was a daughter of Robert and Agnes Farquhar, and (lie youngest of their family of seven. The Farquhar family came to New Zealand early in the year 1864 in the Andrew Jackson. They took up land at Tokomairiro, and after living there for two years removed to Warepa. where they owned a store and had charge of the post office. Mrs Heckler received her education at the Warepa School. In August, 1892, she was married to Mr William Martin Heckler at Knox Church, Dunedin, and for some time they lived at “ Glenfalloch,” Warepa, later taking over the “ Hillside ” property, where Mrs Heckler resided until her death. Her husband predeceased her 16 years ago. Mrs Heckler is survived by one son, Mr William Heckler (Masterton), and two daughters, Mrs R. C. McKerrow and Miss Margaret Heckler (Warepa).
