BALCLUTHA Patriotic Effort A garden party at the High School grounds under the auspices of the local branch of the Red Cross and a football match at the Show Ground under the auspices of the Balclutha Football Club were favoured by fine weather, and there was a fair attendance at each, although the majority favoured the football match. This was a match between the married and the single members of the club, and resulted in a win for the single men by 14 points to 6 points. The married men included some stalwarts like T. Gold. Baragwanath, Fookes. K. Mclntosh, and H. Major, who have all played this season, but others like D. Inglis, A. Greenail, A. Miller. E. Michie, T. Tsukigawa, L. McLean, and B. Hill had for some time been merely lookers-on. They gave a good account of themselves, but were beaten by the younger men. who have been playing all season, Mr C. Williams was the referee. The gale takings amounted to £7. and this will be devoted to the Air Force Queen Fund. At the Higli School grounds one of the attractions was a musical programme in the assembly hall, contributed to by Pam Patterson (Highland dance). Mrs D. Brown, and Mrs J. G. Anderson (pianoforte duet). Lilian Scott (character song and dance), items by the pupils’ versespeaking choir of 16 girls. A cake and produce stall and afternoon tea (served in the library) did satisfactory Tlie takings for the afternoon amounted to £l3. which also goes to the Air Force Queen. Footballers’ Race At an interval in the football match on Saturday a footballers’ race was held. Six started, and the winner was D. Sutherland. with P. Shand second. The winner drew the ticket in a raffle, winch was won by Mrs Alan Greenail. the prize being a book of tickets In the Queen Carnival house art union. Football Accident D. Sutherland took P. Shand’s place in the last spell of the football match, and unforunately met with an accident, suffering a dislocated collar-bone. He received attention on the ground Smoke Concert There was a good attendance at the annual smoke concert of the Clutha Football Club, held in the clubroom on Saturday night. Mr L. McLean, president, was in the chair. The president, on behalf of the club, presented Mr T. Tsukigawa with a bedroom lamp from his clubmates on the occasion ot his recent marriage. Mr Tinsley Wilson, on behalf of the South Otago Sub-union, presented the knock-out cup. won bv tlic senior team Golf In the third round ot the knock-out competition on the Balclutha links on Saturday. Grace beat Thompson. Robinson beat Marshall, and Mathewson beat Dodds There is still one match to be plavcd Fishing Season Prospects for anglers are said to be good for the opening of (he trout fishing season. The Waipahi is spoken of as a stream likely to provide very good sport, and so is the Puerua.
