OAMARU DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB GOOD STANDARD OF SHOOTING SUCCESSFUL YEAR ON FEDERAL RANGE The annual report of the Oamaru Defence Rifle Club states, inter alia, that another successful year was experienced on the Federal range The weather conditions were good and the general scoring well up to the standard of previous years Deputy President H. Koppert was congratulated on winning the Club Championship in a competition that was interesting at all stages. The Nichols Cup foi handicap aggregate over all ranges was won by R. L. McLatchie with a score of 627, N. McLatchie being second with 626. The Hopwood Cup for most possibles resulted in a tie between R.M.S Orbell and A. G. Allan, and the Mosely Memorial Cup for handicap aggregate at 600 yards was won by Deputy President II Koppert. The club was again represented at the Otago Rifle Association’s meeting at Easter in Dunedin, and Deputy President H Koppert was successful in winning tire Ashburton Challenge Cup for the highest score in the Ladies' Challenge Shield competition Matches.—Tlie two annual tixtures tor the O.K. Shield with the Kiwi Club resulted in Kiwi winning both events. Handicapping.—The automatic system of handicapping was used again this year, and again proved successful. Members were indebted to R. L. McLatchie foi; time and trouble given in this connection. Finances.—The finances of the club were still in a healthy position. NAPIER HONOURED On Friday night the members ot the Oamaru branch of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph and Money Order and Savings Bank Departments held a social evening in honour of Mr A. Napier, who has retired from the Money Order branch. The postmaster (Mr J B. Purcell) presided, and a musical programme was presented by the following:—Mr H. Spencer (banjo items), Mr G. Henderson (songs), Mr S. McDowell (recitations), Mr G. Finnic (bagpipe selections), and Mr J. S. Dodds led a community sing. In proposing the toast of the guest of the evening. Mr Purcell spoke in glowing terms of Mr Napier's long and faithful service to the department, and wished him and Mrs Napier long life and good health in their retirement. Messrs G. Cartwright, H. C. Lightwood. and P. Reilly also spoke, and Mr Napier suitably replied. CARNIVAL PROCESSION DECORATED VEHICLES Processions will be held in connection with the Queen Carnival patriotic gala at the end of this week. On Friday night the procession, which will assemble in Severn street at 7.15 p.m.. will be led by the Oamaru Fire Brigade. Garrison Band, and Oamaru Savage Club, followed bv decorated vehicles and trade displays. The procession will move north in Thames street to Dee street, returning south to the Great War Memorial, and thence to the Opera House, where the 4ZB community sing will commence at 8.30 p.m. On Saturday the procession will be enlarged, and it will again be led by the Oamaru Fire Brigade and Garrison Band, followed by the National Reserve, decorated vehicles. Pipe Band, and trade displays. The procession will assemble at Takaro Park at 10.15 a.m.. and will proceed via Steward street to Thames street, and thence north to the racecourse, where the gala will be held. TENT CATCHES FIRE

ELDERLY MAN RECEIVES BURNS A tent beyond the Glebe In Chalmer street, occupied by an elderly man, Mr Alexander McNaughton. was destroyed by fire on Sunday night. Yesterday morning, Mr McNaughton was found in a hut nearby, suffering from burns, shock and exposure, having crawled from the scene of the fire and spent the night in the hut. He was taken to the Oamaru Public Hospital by the St. John Ambulance, His condition yesterday afternoon was reported to be fairly serious. PATHFINDERS’ CLUB ANNUAL DEMONSTRATION The thirty-fourth annual demonstration of the Oamaru Pathfinders’ Club took place last week. Pastor J. Crawford presiding. A display of Sandow exercises, parallel and horizontal bar work by members of the club was of a high order. An enjoyable programme of vocal and instrumental items was provided by Misses Henderson, K. Junction Hotel, Severn street, has been advised by the Minister of Defence that his son, Private W J. Orlowski. died on September 2G in Egypt, from shock following severe burns received in an accident. Private Orlowski was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs F. Orlowski. and was born in Oamaru and educated at the Christian Brothers’ School. At the age of 17, he joined the special reserve in Christchurch, and was only 18 years of age when he joined up with the first echelon. Before enlisting he followed farm work. Private Orlowski is the first soldier from North Otago in the first echelon reported to have made the supreme sacrifice in the present war, ALLEGED ASSAULT ACCUSED REMANDED Peter Thompson, who was arrested by Constable Cogger on Sunday, appeared before Mr W. S. Crombie. J.P., at the Police Court yesterday morning, and was charged with assaulting Robert' Hair at Omarama on September" 28 so as to cause actua bodily harm. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Emergency I'iecautions. —A meeting of the Oamaru Emergency Precautions Committee was held yesterday morning, the Mayor (Mr L. J K. Familton) presiding. Numerous matters of detail were revised, and various controllers’ reports showed that the organisation was practically complete. Building Permits.—Five building permits, of a total vaue of £7789, were issued by the Oamaru Borough Council last month. Of this sum, £7721 is accounted for in a residence and additions to two wool stores, and the balance by a garage (£43), and additions to a porch (£25). Waitaki Bridge Lawn Tennis Club. —The opening day of the Waitaki Bridge Lawn Tennis Club was held on Saturday afternoon, when a large number of members was present. Mr J. B. Chapman (president) opened (he season, and Mr H. Brosnan also spoke. Mrs Doyle (secretary) served the first ball, and a friendly match was played with Glenavy players. In the evening an enjoyable dance was held. Mrs Hewson supplying the music. Oamaru Rotary Club.—At the weekly luncheon of the Oamaru Rotary Club yesterday the speaker was Mr J. H. Main, liis subject being petrol restrictions. Rotarian President A. R. Tait presided, and the vote of thanks was moved by Rotarian E. S. Stubbs.
