MR CURTIN RETURNED LAST-MINUTE VICTORY SUPPORT FKOM SOLDIERS (United Press Association) (By Electric .Telegraph—Copyright) ~ SYDNEY, Sept. 28. . (Received Sept. 29, at 7.30 p.m.) The most surprising development in the week-end checking of absent and postal votes and distribution oi preferences in 12 doubtful contests in the recent Federal election's was a last-minute victory for the Labour leader, Mr J. Curtin, in Fremantle, by522-votes. This was due mainly to the good support he received,from the soldiers. Mr Curtin has ascertained that the Communists of Western Australia hurled a block vote of 6000 against him to cause his early There is still a number of seats definitely in doubt, of which Labour needs five in order to deprive the Government of a working majority. It appears to have an excellent chance of winning four, if hot five.
