BRITISH AIR ACTIVITY ENEMY FORT ATTACKED DIRECT HITS SCORED (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) CAIRO. Sept. 28. (Received Sept. 29, at 8 p.m.) A Royal Air Force communique states that a bomber squadron yesterday attacked Giarabub fort and scored many direct hits. A large cloud of smoke arose. Enemy fighters attacked the formation on its return from the raid, and one Italian plane was shot down. One of ours did not return.
An attack was also made on a motor transport concentration 25 miles south of Giarabub. Bombs fell on stationary vehicles, and many fires and explosions occurred. A Nairobi communique received on Saturday says: "Successful attacks on Maji were carried out by the South African Air Force en Thursday. Waves of aircraft bombed military buildings and aerodromes, direct hits being scored on buildings, and large fires were started. In addition, numerous reconnaissance flights were carried out over Abyssinia and Somaliland. All our machines returned safely." A message from Rome states that two bomber formations escorted by fighters again attacked Malta, bombing Micaba and Halfar airports. Clearing up operations and reconnaissance continued in North Africa and the British bombed Garnulgrein. and Giarabub, about 150 miles southward of Tobruk. There Were a few casualties. British mechanised units twice attacked the Kassala zone and retired with losses. Our Air Force bombed enemy defences in the middle Sudan.
