COMMERCE FACULTY BALL
STUDENTS IN GALA MOOD From the outset it was a foregone conclusion that the Commerce Ball, held in the Ciawford Lounge last night, would be an unqualified success. The two factors ensuring this were that it followed the University examinations and preceded the departure for camp of the Universitv Territorial Company It was the first big ball the commerce facultv has held for several vea;s and the attendance of some 60 couples handily helped to produce a profit, which the executive will be pleased to hand, over to the Army Queen funds The president of the faculty Mr T. E. Davis, and his partner Miss Cecile Jones (who wore while floral ninon with green sash and accessories) received the guests, who included the dean of the Commerce Faculty (Mr J. M. Paterson). Mr and Mrs L M Satterthwaite (chaperones) the latter wearing black figured satin Mr R J Cooke (representative of the New Zealand Society of Accountants) and Miss Doris Meldrum, Mr Charles Hubbard (president of the Otago University Students’ Association) and Miss Valerie Todd. Mr J J Dickie ireprecenting the Law Faculty) and Miss Joyce Ainge. and Mr J A. Ainge (secretary of the Commerce Faculty Students’ Association) and Miss Jocelyn Cook. Miss Cecile Jones wore a spray of cream roses and freesias the gift of the executive Bright dance music was supplied oy Fred Gedsons’ Band. Later in the evening members of the University A football team arrived, the occasion being the signal for a minor demon stration of enthusiasm.

The Taieri Institute held its monthly meeting on Thursday last, when Mrs Taylor presided. The motto was “ The Creed” (fifth verse), and the roll cal! “ Humorous incident.” A letter from “ Lindean,” Scotland, was read by Mrs Williamson. The Rev. Mr Densem gave an interesting talk on work done by the women in England from the standpoint of the Y.M.C.A. Money collected to date for soldiers’ parcels amounts to £4 2s. The hostesses were the members.
