WORKERS PROTEST
HOURS IN DAIRY FACTORIES RECENT ORDER UNJUSTIFIED (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N.. Sept. 27. The annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Dairy Factory and Related Trades’ Union of Workers passed a resolution protesting at the extension of the 52-hour period in cheese factories from 22 weeks to a maximum of 43 weeks, contending that this would not help in any way in the production of the extra 15.000 tons of cheese required. “The recent order,” states the resolution, “ will do nothing except to compel workers in those factories that work under the order to work all hours in excess of 44 for Is 3d an hour and all hours in excess of 38 hours for 9d an hour. The overwhelming weight of evidence given before the Industrial Emergency Committee was in favour of the workers, but the Minister of Labour, with the agreement of the socalled representatives of Labour appointed to that committee, has seen fit to deal the dairy workers a blow we are not likely to forget.”
