December 7.—Waikato T.C Lawn Derby Lawn Derby, the only horse in the southern hemisphere to attain a record better than two minutes for a mile, will stand the season at Cowra, New South Wales. Importations Restricted Because of the refusal of the New Zealand Government to grant the buyer an Import licence, the two-year-old daughter of Van Derby and Belle Logan lias been left on Mr E. Tatlow’s hands in Tasmania, says the Australian Trotting Record of September 18. On learning of the inability of the buyer to take delivery. Mr Tatlow broke the filly in, and already she has proved a . sweet-going pacer. As Belle Logan has thrown so many winners, Including the celebrated Logan Derby, Mr Tatlow should not be long finding a new buyer. Novices Novice pacers engaged in the Westward Ho Handicap at Methven include the following: Black Label, syrs, by Man o’ War —Frances Pointer; Castlebar, 4yrs, by Jack Potts—Guy Parrish mare; Easy Ace, 4yrs, by Jack Potts—Dusky Locanda; Festivity. 3yrs, by Rey de Oro—Trlx Pointer; Gallworthy, syrs, by Gallinford—Goldworthy; Native Man. 6yrs, by Man o’ War —Native Shrub; Rorqual, 6yrs, by Man o’ War— Wildwood Junior mare; Shannon Lass, 4yrs. by Man o’ War—Dorack; and Silver Flash, syrs, by Great Chenauit—After Dark. Unwieldv Fields It is not often that clubs welcome a reduction in the size of the fields for their meetings, but possibly (says the Press) the Methven Trotting Club officials would not be disappointed if half the horses nominated for the Westward Ho and Mount Harding Handicaps declined their engagements In the former race 46 horses were nominated, and of these 40 have been set to start off the limit, while of the 45 horses nominated for the Mount Harding Handi cap, 34 are on the front of the handicap Both races will be run over a mile and a-quarter, and the safety number on this course is set down as 12, with permission to start fhree more than this number. It is not likely that there will be manv scratching. l -- for the Westward Ho Handicap, for owners of maiden pacers find here a rare opportunity for giving their horses valuable racing experience Unless there are 10 or more withdrawals when acceptances close on Monday, the club will have no option but to run the race in three divisions, while in the Mount Harding Handicap the defections of four entrants are needed to obviate the necessitv of three divisions It appears certain tha‘ the club cannot escape two divisions in each, of these races. From the day Methven decided to substitute galloping with trotting, it has earned the greatest popularity with owners, trainers, and the general public—a popularity that has now become an embarrassment.
