SCOUT’S HEROISM

GILT CROSS AWARDED SAVED LAD FROM DROWNING (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. The gilt cross of the Boy Scouts’ Association for gallantry has been awarded to Ralp Watkin aged 13, of the Calliope Sea Scouts. Devonport, Auckland for saving another lad from drowning Dominion Headquarters of the Scout movement, Wellington, has received advice that the Dominion Chief Scout Lord Galway, has approved the award. On April 7 Watkin went swimming at Devonport Beach with his brother Colin They swam out to a raft about 50 yards from the shore through a choppy sea. Another boy Rex Cubitt, then started for the raft, but on the way he tired and sank Ralph dived in and started to bring the other boy ashore bv the approved life-saving method Cubitt struggled and hit out wildlv with his fists, but Ralph’s training enabled him to secure the boy and tow him ashore. Both were exhausted, and were helper; out of the water by a stranger Cubitt would certainly have drowned had he been alone.
